HMS Holland No1 1903

The subject of this build, HMS Holland No.1
The first submarine of the British navy. 

Designed by American John Phillip Holland – after whom it was named  

A colourized period image. 

 

 

The propeller and rudder arrangements of the preserved Holland No1 at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport. 

The parts, it even comes with a small pe fret. 

Fit is excellent sofar. Parts are fiddly, and flash is all around, but the plastic is friendly to work with. 

Very clever design by Mikromir, by molding it this way you are able to clean the ring without the risk of breaking it, as the inner is quite rigid.  

The rudder and propeller in place. To make life easier I substituted the etched parts for evergreen strip.

I replaced a few bits of pe for evergreen, as one part flew off, never to be seen again...

I've added all of the small pieces as well, hope I won't regret it when painting.
Most will be painted by hand, as it is quite small.

Third (and final?) layer of white. 

Creating the rather large flag using foil and the kits decals. The flag came as one large decal, which I cut in half. 

The first half is placed on the foil, with a generous amount of microsol and left to dry

Opposite side applied with liberal amounts of microsol. 

Painting straight freehand is harder than I thought  

Got 'some' touching up work to do... 

Other grey added, it is a slow process, but quite Zen

Basic painting is done, next step are all of those decals, and after both decals are on, weathering  

 

Decals are on, flood holes picked out in black and exhaust got a first wash.

More weathering done, trying hard not to overdo it  

 

There is a small clear lens on the periscope, but it is hardly visable in the picture  

Finished flag, needs another dull coat to look right. 

Glued to the base, and left to dry, supported by Tamiya and Mig  

I'm calling it done.
Better pictures will follow when all is dry. 

 

It is really dwarfed between the other subs in the cabinet
