Supermarine Walrus

The 3d work done in fusion 360. Really easy software to use. 

 

Main reference materials that I used for this project. 

This image shows the reference images used, they are scaled to 1/48 (ignore the 1/200). Gives a good idea how the finish project will look. 

The first few items printed and ready. 

Because of the size of the turret I had to print it in 2 sections. The air vents were printed individually and glued in place. 

The rivets are punched from foil, and dynmo tape used to ensure that the rivets are straight. The are fixed in place with varnish. 

The rivets in place and the range finder assembly glued. 

The text of the steel is created with model filler, humbrol thinned with extra thin tamiya glue, this is then stipple on and left to dry. 

 

Once the putty had dried the peaks were sanded back to give the steel texture. 

The texture also serves to flatten out the ridges from the 3d printing process

This is the turret interface ring, I will attach a servo to the center hole and control the rotation with a arduino board.

The turret rotates really smoothly. 

Process of printing the deck structure that wraps around the barbette. This is the right half. 

The lattice infill give great strength and reduces weight. It also stops the print from warping during the print

The ancillary components for the catapult are made using a resin printer. This is the air cylinder for the side of the catapult still on the build plate

The airfix kit is pretty good scale wise. 

The internal detail, which is already excellent is improved by using the eduard etch. Shame most of it will be hidden 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Little bit more progress, assembled the catapult trolley 

Also added a trim to bottom of the barbette, this needed soaking to get it to bend 

 

 

 

 

Finally move into our hobby room after a nomadic modelling life 

Started to paint the deck, using acrylics and then a enamel wood filter (Orange and then dark wood stain) 

The foam base is going to be covered with 4 acrylic plates, with images transfered onto them 

The images are printed in reverse on a laser printer. It's then covered with transfer medium, rolled flat and left to dry. 

24 hours later the printer paper is wetted and rubbed off to leave the image. 

The last side will have some text giving some context to 700 squadron and HMS Resolution. 

Started to work on the weathering, in this shot the middle 3 brackets have been weathered compared to the un weathered end. 

I'm using AK weathering pencils for the first time. Took a bit of getting used too and I do need to knock back some of the heavier effect because they look a bit overdone. 

Added some dark streaks and darker rust streaks. Also used bright aluminium along some of the edges 

I will tone done some of the orange rust streaks as I over did these. Luckily it can be removed with a normal eraser.

Start to paint the turret, firstly with a black undercoat 

Also undercoated the barbette 

 

Then went over and highlighted the individual areas 

 

Also highlighted over the flat areas of the barbette 

Final highlighted the rivets and some of the edge 

Finally sprayed the base grey colour 

 

 

 

Next step will a vanish and start to weather. 

 

Start to create the chips along the edge of the turret with light grey 

 

Once all the light grey chips are added went over them with German grey. 

Next stage will be a vanish and then some washes 

Chipped the barbette and then applied a blue wash. Pin washed the rivets with a black panel wash  

 

Started the streaking, once its dried I will add some rust streaks, and then a flat coat. 

 

Final stage of the weathering, add rust streaks. This is after I had just finished applying it, tomorrow it gets a flat coat. 

 

 

 

 

 

Getting close to the finish now, need to add some pulleys to the catapult, guard rail, extra supports and then finish the walrus 

Started to finish the catapult, removed the launching piston and attached the 2 cables 

Then fed the whole assembly through the bottom truss of the catapult, although I had design it to be removable it was a bit of a squeeze. 

Fed the cables through the front pulley assembly then under the launch trolley. 

Around the pulley on the catapult extension and back to the trolley 

 

All the cables in place, time to matt everything, and the permanently attach to the Turret 

 

 

 

Weathered the barrels today with bronze, burnt grease and gun metal pigments 

Also glue the canvas barrel boots in place 

Added the guard rail to the catapult walkway 

 

Permanently glued the catapult to the turret, added the extra support frame underneath the front.  

 

 

 

 

 

I`m finally finished , everything is fixed to the base. Overall I pretty happy how it turned out, If I did it over I would do a few things differently( weathering and construction), but I learned a lot and had fun which what its all about!!

Although I say I`m finished I am working on a motor to rotate the turret back and forth, but that`s for the benefit of my model club and doesn`t translate to a photo album.
