Glad you like it! I got the idea from a very cool looking dio on the Starship Modeler site, and since my club is doing a mall display for the month of January, I thought this would be appropriate. Also doesn't hurt that the new Star Wars movie comes out in December!

Thanks guys for the kind words! @ Michael...to anchor the Lego down, I used Blue-Tac. Depends on what it is called where you are, but it is that reusable stuff you can hang pictures with on a wall. I rolled it into a lengthy snake and placed on the bottom of the Lego. Squish it down, and you have your seal. To make the edges clean, I sliced off any offending Blue-Tac inside the mould with an X-Acto knife. I made 2 moulds of each of my 5 tiles and had 3 pull up towards the end when I removed the Lego dam. No harm to the mould or the tile!

Just got the X-Wing kit and directly went into some "camo" research 😄
Just realized that the proposed paint scheme with the yellow on the fuselage, discontinued red band on the sides and the blue bands on the blasters doesn't fit at least for Luke's X-Wing in Episode IV.
Just as information to those who want to build it as it appeares in the movie.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. Have been on holidays these past couple of weeks, but should be back at it this weekend. Next up will be the 1" PVC tubing support for the base and back.

Hey everyone...I'm back at it! That pesky thing called LIFE got in the way. The base should be painted on the weekend and I'm already starting the ships.

Thanks guys! I'm itching to get this one finished soon.
@ Chris....vaca was awesome! Went to the West coast to visit some friends in Calgary, AB, and Abbotsford, BC, then down to Washington for a few days. Weather was perfect and I came back with a few models to spread out amongst our Club brethren.

@Chris...yup, in the early stages of completion on the X-wing...should have pics up in a couple of days. Still have plenty of time before January 10th...I hope! I do have some pics I will upload today.
@Steve....I used one of the gallon units of Smooth On Smooth Cast 310 (approx. 15.4 lbs) and 3 of the trial size (1.9 lbs).

Thanks for the kind comments guys! Yes Chris...I have heard that too re: Dragon. I have seen a picture of some of their 1/35th figures pointing at something behind them and it had 4 legs VERY similiar to an AT-AT. Imagine the size of that critter in that scale!

Bandai really do seem to have set the standard
now with their recent high quality releases.
Dragon has some serious competition, I hope they
stick to standard scales unlike the Revell, Airfix,
AMT/ERTL etc. with their silly 1/43 1/57 etc.
Anyhow Ken, are all those tiles stuck down yet or can
you still change the arrangement of the tiles ? 🙂
Cool project, also fancy given this casting thing a
go as the AMT Tie Fighters kit I have has a half
decent tile, not screen accurate like the ones you have 🙂
but worth a mess about 😄
Anyhow, wanted to ask what do I need to do it, I can't
find smooth cast in the UK, not without spending silly money....
So I need some kind of silicone rubber to make the mold,
or is it latex ?
and then some kind of release agent ?
and what kind of resin do I need ?
low viscosity no doubt for easy pouring ? 🙂
Cheers in advance 🙂

@Choppa....the tiles are stuck down already, so no go on changing the arrangement. For my moulds I have used a silicone-based rubber. A one-to-one mixable is the way to go. The brand I used was self-degassing (low viscosity) so no need for a vacuum chamber. A release agent is a good idea if you want the moulds to last. I used one available from the place I purchased the silicone and resin, but I noticed that where I work (printing company) the guys on the presses use silicone in some of their applications too. I think you could probably find something very similar in a DIY store. The resin I used was also a one-to-one mixable that was also self-degassing. Mine was the longest mix-time and longest cure-time resin that they sold as I too hadn't cast before.
Hope this helps!

Thank you Ken,
it helps me have a better idea for what I am asking for when I hit the diy store 🙂
Fair enough if the tiles were stuck down, it was I just saw this bit whilst watching the Death Star attack run again 😄
It looks just like the tiles from the Bandai kits, though they seemed to have chopped some of them into and halves and quarters etc. for more arrangement variety etc. but those tiles are spot on to the movie, very cool 🙂
In the photo below shows a very satisfying circle arrangement.
One question though, what was the kit that the tile on photo 6 came from ?
Because I can only find four Bandai kits that have Death Star tiles..
Anyhow, awesome project 👍

Well...I had to create that tile for the same reason you found out...it hasn't been introduced into a kit yet. However, one of the pics I found from a show that Bandai was at, shows a display with multiple tiles on it and one like this is shown. I live in hope that after the new Star Wars kits come out, Bandai will revisit the original series and possibly come out with a B-Wing and or an A-Wing.

and an Interceptor too !! 🙂
And to release them in 1/48th too
I also hope they do a 1/12 landspeeder with Luke and Obiwan figures
I wanna see them do a Star Destroyer with scaled blockade runner and M. Falcon, Death Star, Tydirium shuttle 1//72. So many cool designs.
They could even do a death star surface kit with a selection of tiles and gun turrets etc.
Anyhow Ken, nicely done on making that tile from scratch, looks just right.
I wonder what you might want for a set of those five tiles ? 🙂

@Urban...yeah, I forgot about the Tie Bomber...that would also be very welcome.
@Choppa...I still have the moulds, but I am all out of resin and have used all my tiles for this display. If anything changes I will let you know.

Cheers Ken,
Be sure not to throw those molds away 😄
Actually what I should have inquired about was what would you like in exchange or payment if you were to make me some molds instead ?😉

Oooohhhh....just found a cool new teaser image to use. I have sprayed the Tie Fighters and masked for the Tie Advanced's wings (black inserts and frames moulded together). Will post some images soon. Only have until January 10th to complete this.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I just finished up and not a moment too soon! My club's mall show is tomorrow morning. The clear acrylic rods that the craft rest on are removable from the base. My plan is to cap them when not in use and to make other holes so that I can put my 3 Y-Wings on to simulate the first run for the port hole.

as far as I know, Revell have reissued their pocket line as a normal boxed kit with randon scales for a biger price, they had not reissued Finemolds... by the way, exelent job! very inspiring!

Very true Urban as they can be double at £400 quite often for the Falcon 🙂
900 parts !! one hell of a kit but I've decided to go down the Revell Easy Kit and mod it.
