No.22 Squadron, S.A.A.F., was a maritime patrol squadron that spent most of its existence operating from South Africa before moving to Gibraltar in June 1944.
The squadron was formed at Durban on 1 July 1942 and was equipped with a mix of Avro Ansons and Junkers Ju 86s taken from South African Airways. For the next two years it performed general reconnaissance duties, protected shipping around the South African coast. These aircraft were soon replaced with Lockheed Venturas, which in June 1944 the squadron took to Gibraltar. For the rest of the war No.22 Squadron flew anti-submarine patrols in the Western Mediterranean. After the end of the war it flew to Egypt, where on 24 October 1945 the squadron disbanded.
