In 1937 Fairey finally won it's battle with the Air Ministry over the need for a twin-engine light bomber, and after being impressed with designs by Miles, the contract was awarded to Supermarine. Thankfully for Fairey, in a rush to prove it's air force was not obsolete the US Army bought the single-engine Battles and wanted more. The first 80 half completed ones were shipped to New York, and rapidly converted to fighters by Schweizer, these proved to have a fantastic long-range performance. This also enabled Packard to get their hands on a Merlin engine, and led (as we all know) to the Miles M.20 Vulture wining the Battle of Britain.
