No, I mean priming i grey, the marbling in black &white and ending with a semi transparent top layer

I have an extra hood form a few cars ago, I'll try and learn that technique on it, I can't really visualize the result. But for this car just a straight spray.
14 April 2019, 19:06

I see what you did there... That looks like a technique that will take several tries to get down. I'm more comfortable with just blasting a single color in a couple layers... also, I can't trust the random spittle and quality of the spray of my crappy generic $20 airbrush to evenly overcoat the preshading... and it makes me nervous.
14 April 2019, 20:35

No worries. Your build, your rules.
And your paintjobs look great from this side of the Atlantic 😉
14 April 2019, 20:37

Sanded the nubbs off and sanded down the exterior pieces. Nice and smooth 🙂 The interior walls were warped, so I just went ahead and glued them in place so I don't have to deal with them later.
15 April 2019, 23:21

Damn, Chris. It's hard to keep up. Following now before it's completed already...
15 April 2019, 23:29

ha... That's what happens when you have time to model for hours and hours everyday 😛
15 April 2019, 23:35

I really like that all the plastic is the same color and type, and no chrome. I've purchased a few military and miniart kits recently and I love that they're all monochrome plastic. For some reason I find the pre-colored sprues annoying and it seems pointless too. Do people really build the kits without painting? I guess one could.
However, back when I was a kid all the kits where grey plastic but then Matchbox came out with colored plastic sprues (Or at least that's how I remember it) and I thought that was really cool. Of course painting was a lot more hassle (brush painting with enamels), particularly large flat areas, and in some cases I'm sure I didn't paint sections, so at that time it was a bonus.
Today though I kind of grit my teeth when I see the different colors. And don't get me started on chrome or I'm going to wear out my keyboard...
15 April 2019, 23:44

Tom, I feel your pain... I hate color sprues. Why have colored plastic when you prime and paint over it anyways... The Blue Shark was like that, and even worse it was sparkly blue plastic, which confused me more.... Yay for white (and the kits with grey) plastic.
16 April 2019, 00:05

Before anything I primed and sprayed that dark brown on the interior roof, the brown on the chassis piece will pop through to the interior when the pieces are together. After that I masked the body and I got everything primed.
17 April 2019, 00:57

No chrome... Just Tamiya X-1 Gloss Black... Just my best spray work so far... so yeah, badass 🙂
17 April 2019, 03:31

Richmond, I have the whole grit set of the Tamiya sanding sponges. scalemates.com/searc..amiya+sanding+sponge
17 April 2019, 15:51

Is it bad that I love updating and fixing the scalemates database when I see something?... It's just so relaxing to fix these kinds of errors... For example, the tamiya sponge page images looked like crap. I googled and cropped new images so that they show correctly on the results page and a uniform look across.
17 April 2019, 21:12

Is it bad?... eh you are talking to modelers here you know. Not sure how Tim puts up with all of us.
17 April 2019, 21:18

Donald.... it's just Vallejo black primer, with the X-1... The picture was right after I sprayed it so it had that wet look, and was under the spray booth LEDs... it dulled up a little as it dried, but it still looks so shiny.
17 April 2019, 21:28

Are you going to be caroming anything? And if so what will you use? X-11?
17 April 2019, 22:00

Yeah, I super cleaned the wheels, I'll be using Glorious Gold (72.056) with Model Air chrome (71.064) to try and match box. I could use X-11 I guess, I do have it in my stock. I've just been happy with the MA Chrome.
17 April 2019, 22:07

Meh to X11. I don't care for it at all. The only other chrome I've used is Alclads but I should look at others too.
17 April 2019, 22:43

I like the results of Tamiya paints, but their composition is weird when trying to brush.... instead of just drying on the palette, it gets sticky quick after dispensing from the bottle, even after adding X-20a. When I brush with Vallejo it acts like it should... it just dries up... add drops of X-20a to keep the party going... no sticky gunk... all usable... Also, I really dislike that Tamiya is in bottles and not droppers.... that would be so awesome... I know I can buy empty and transfer, but bleh. So Tom, if I'm brushing then I'll use MA Chrome... and if I'm spraying I'll either use MA Chrome or X-11. I do like X-11.
17 April 2019, 23:58

For hand painting I definitely use Tamiya's retarder: scalemates.com/color..acrylic-clear--12370
18 April 2019, 00:54

I use the X-20a thinner when hand brushing, guess I've been using the wrong stuff... will order retarder soon.
18 April 2019, 01:56

Nice wheels Chris! Those remind me of the ones I used to have on my 91 Jeep Cherokee. Miss that one...
18 April 2019, 02:01

A state trooper in a Datsun? That must have led to some friendly ribbing?
18 April 2019, 13:51

Thanks all! Now time for some toothpick art 😛 Everything is painted aside from the dashboard. I Think the two-tone brown matches my reference picture perfectly. Can anyone recommend a quality set of detailing paint brushes? I'm looking for maybe a 6-12 brush set to get in the tiny places like instrument panels, dashboards, etc... Thanks! [img1]

20 April 2019, 07:02

Dang guys... lol... I didn't get to bed til 4am 😛 lemme get some sleep... it's 10am and now breakfast and photo's.... soooooooooon.......
20 April 2019, 17:26

For the record, this is the 36th build since starting the hobby.
20 April 2019, 19:04

Great Job ! Reminds me of Dad's old Z, Thanks for the Flashback ! Keep em coming ! Do I see a 300 SL pulling up the rear here soon?
20 April 2019, 19:08

Thanks Guys!! The SL has no color scheme, gotta make one up, but yes... soon. I think I'll do the scalemates.com/kits/..n-new-beetle--104801 in the meantime, with Vallejos Pastel Blue as the body color.
20 April 2019, 19:14

Thanks guys! It means alot 😄 I was kind of disappointed in the box art, whoever built it used foil where I painted chrome, except the guys foil was super wrinkly, it was distasteful, especially for the box art.
20 April 2019, 23:40

Thanks, and hello, nice to see a new face 🙂 on a separate note... I was tired of my projects page looking like a goofed up mess by using standard pictures sizes as the project title image... so I made a set of images that are 1440x400, now the page looks alot nicer 😄
21 April 2019, 01:36

This is one of my latest purchase. Nicely built. I like the dashboard compared to the original.
2 July 2019, 12:05

...now I have this lady in the stash. Well built!
Are there some issues I have to watch at? In my opinion, it sits a little bit to high (highwheels 🙂 ), that I'll change one mine.
1 September 2019, 08:29

That's brilliant Chris! Lots of these 280's & 300's got sold in the U.K., remember them well
1 September 2019, 08:40

@All, Thanks guys!!!!!
@Dominik, This was many cars ago, but I don't remember any issues. Although I'm not a perfectionist by any means. I usually just paint and build, then slam 'em together not really worrying about defects (unless it's a big issue). I may not be the best person to ask technical questions. I just do this for fun, and if it's not fun, it's not being done 😄
Cheers!
If you remember, P.M. me when you start your project 😄
1 September 2019, 17:23

I'm building for fun also Chris 😉
It should be an easy kit. If it wasn't, you kept it in mind 🙂. Thanks!
And if I build mine, I keep you knowing.
