DongFeng-1 missile
1
February 2, 2021Off we go. Here the sprues. The only objectively difficult thing here will be to built up the launch pad as it consists of many small parts - nothing that a modeler with some expierience can't handle2
February 4, 2021Parts of step 1 from the instruction cleaned up and prepared for assembly.3
February 4, 2021Step 1 assembled.4
February 4, 2021Another view.5
February 6, 2021Parts for stage 2 cleaned up.6
February 6, 2021Stage 2 assembled.7
February 6, 2021Another view.8
February 7, 2021Step 3 complete. Lots of fiddly parts but fortunately managed to break only two with my big fingers🙂9
February 7, 2021Completed step 4 today also.10
February 7, 2021Launch pad complete, with around 30 parts its very good detailed. Now on to final clean up, degreasing and priming.11
February 9, 2021First layer of primer down. After it dries some corrections await. Made the mistake of starting to sand the parts with 1200 grit and unfortunately some push marks are still visible.12
February 18, 2021Final coat of primer down on the launch platform and missile exhaust.13
February 19, 2021First layer of tamiya dark green sprayed on.14
February 20, 2021Second layer down plus started work on the missile exhaust.15
February 20, 2021Bought the V-2 also. Here the comparison. The Dongfeng is a V-2 on steroids 🙂16
February 21, 2021Mr. Hobby flat varnish sprayed on the launch platform - considering the platform done. Assembled all detail part on the missile halves.17
February 24, 2021Missile body assembled. Fit was good after dry fitting but still there is a seam that needs to be sanded and gaps that need to be filled on both sides.18
February 25, 2021Sanded the seams initially with 800 grit and used mr. Hobby liquid putty.19
March 18, 2021The Missile is primed with the first layer, some minor correction needed before the next coat.20
April 2, 2021Corrections made and the first layer of tamiya silver has been applied. I wanted the riveting to stand out more as it begun to dissapear after a few coats of primer. I did so with the mr hobby rescribig tool which is also good for riveting only to find out after more research that it was not too much visible on the missile but decided to leave it as it is. Actually the one I am kitting now (Beijing museum piece) is propably an mockup as it only resembles the SS-2 in outline lacking many distinctive details - a thing that I noticed after more research.21
April 5, 2021Decals applied with the help of micro sol and set. Lost the pitot during painting so needed to exchange it for some spare I had left over. As I am doing the museum example which is in pristine condition no weathering or washes will be applied. The letters on the missile mean Dongfeng-1.22
April 8, 2021Calling it done.
